Ground Cinnamon and Health

By Kameal L. Anderson 3 Comments

ground cinnamonGround cinnamon is available all throughout the year. Its sweet fragrant smell is good to add to all kinds of foods and drinks. Ground cinnamon has been used for decades as both a medicine and a spice. The Ground cinnamon you and I know is really the bark of the cinnamon tree. It comes in two forms; the dried tubular sticks or ground up powder. Chinese and Ceylon are the two types of cinnamon available today. The Ceylon is a slightly sweeter cinnamon than the Chinese version.

Just two teaspoons of ground cinnamon will give you 46% of your daily value of manganese, 11% of fiber, and 5% of calcium. The unique healing abilities of ground cinnamon comes as a result of three things found in the essential oils of the bark.

1.  cinnamyl alcohol

2. cinnamaldehyde

3. cinnamyl acetate

This spice also has a wide range of volatile substances. Cinnamaldehyde has been well researched for it’s effect of the platelets in the blood. Platelets are the part of the blood that clots when you get a cut. This is essential to stop the bleeding of a wound. In normal situations however, blood clotting can cause health problems. Cinnamaldehyde found in ground cinnamon helps to prevent unwanted clotting of the blood. It does this by inhibiting the release of a substance called arachidonic acid.

ground cinnamon1It also reduces the creation of an inflammatory messaging molecule known as thromboxane A2. The essential oils in ground cinnamon also qualifies as an anti-microbial nutrient. This means that it helps stop the growth of bacteria, fungus, and the more problematic yeast called Candida. In laboratory tests, Yeast that was resistant to the anti-fungal medication called  fluconazole, was not resistant to cinnamon extract.

The anti-microbial properties of ground cinnamon is so good that experts say it can be used as an alternative to other food preservatives. A few drops of cinnamon to soups can prevent the growth of harmful food bacteria for up to 60 days.  If you season high carb food with cinnamon, it can help blood sugar levels as well. Ground cinnamon helps slow the rate at which the stomach releases food. This means blood sugar will stay constant longer without spiking.

Can Ground Cinnamon Help With Diseases?

Yes, researchers from the US Agricultural Research Service have found that cinnamon can significantly help with type 2 diabetes. It does this by improving the body’s response to insulin. This in turn helps to maintain or bring the blood back to normal levels. the sweet scent of cinnamon has also been proven to improve brain function. In 2004, research done by Dr. P. Zoladz found that chew cinnamon gum or just inhaling the scent of cinnamon was enough to boost mental processing.

The calcium and fiber in ground cinnamon can also help in colon heath and help prevent heart disease.

How Can You Get Good Cinnamon At The Store.

The cinnamon sticks can definitely be stored longer. However, ground cinnamon has a stronger flavor. Make sure that you can smell the sweet scent of the cinnamon. The strongerground cinnamon2 the smell, the fresher it is. Although both Ceylon and Chinese cinnamon will both be labeled as cinnamon, make sure to get the Ceylon if you are looking for a sweeter cinnamon. The Ceylon ground cinnamon is more rare and might only be available in specialty spice shops and stores.

Ground cinnamon is not just a great tasting spice but it’s healthy for you as well. Next time you want to add a kick to a dish you may be serving. Grab the ground cinnamon and watch out.
