Antioxidants. Why Are They Important?

By Kameal L. Anderson Leave a Comment

antioxidantWe constantly hear about how we need antioxidants. Health news is full of articles and programs that tell us how we need more antioxidants. But what are antioxidants and why do we need them? What happens if we don’t get enough? Well one thing is certain, with the American diet the way it is, it is s guarantee that we don’t get enough of this nutrient in our diet. Antioxidants are found in fruits and vegetables.

Tomatoes, red onions, cucumbers, lemons, limes, and other citrus fruits are all loaded with necessary nutrient. That is why it is important that we get multiple servings of of fresh fruits and vegetables every day. Many people think that drinking red wine is a good way of getting antioxidants. This is not the case how ever. While you may get some antioxidants from red wine the alcohol that comes with it destroys any good benefits that this nutrient might have given you.

Furthermore, to get the amount of antioxidants you would need you would be seriously drunk beyond redemption. There is a much better and safer way to get all the antioxidants your body needs. That is eating fresh fruits and vegetable with every meal. Some people think eating a salad as a meal is enough. This is a good start and certainly better than doing nothing at all. However, each meal requires fresh fruits and/or vegetables with it because fiber is important to move waste out of the body.

What Are Antioxidants?

The word antioxidants basically means anti or against oxygen. Now why would you need something that is against oxygen? Oxygen is what we need to live right? Well that is certainly true. antioxidant 3However, oxygen can become very unstable in the body by taking on or attracting too much electrons around it. This causes the oxygen to become what is call free radicals. These free radicals can take chunks out of healthy cells.

If it damages skin cells, wrinkles will appear. If it damages organ cells cancer can occur. The antioxidants in fruits and vegetables attack these free radicals while leaving the good oxygen alone. They destroy the free radicals and help to keep your skin, (which is the largest organ in and on the human body) and you entire body healthy. Failure to eat enough of this essential and life giving nutrient can leave too many free radicals loose in the body. This can cause problems with health and looking younger longer.

Antioxidant 2Clearly eating fresh fruits and vegetables is important for a healthy body. It is also important in looking healthy as well. Antioxidants is an important ingredient in any good skin care product. Now that you know the importance of antioxidants, go and get more of this life giving nutrient. You can find healthy recipes on this very website. Eat well and live longer. Have a better quality of life with the addition of this nutrient in your diet.
